The Global Energy Prize annually honors outstanding achievements in energy research and technology from around the world that are helping address the world’s various and pressing energy challenges.

Energy consumption reduction – on of the main tasks of the global society

The Global Energy Prize laureate’s press-conference was held today, on June, 18th within the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum platform. Despite of the significant oil price drop and consequent cutting of energy resources saving, energy consumption reduction should remain one of the priority tasks of global society, the scientists believe.

Rodney John Allam, the Chairman of the GEP International Award Committee and the Nobel Prize laureate, Nokolay Laverov, the Chairman of the GEP Board of Trustees, member of Rosneft Board of Directors, Jayant Baliga, the 2015 GEP laureate, Professor of  North Carolina State University,  member of the US National Academy of Engineering, and Shuji Nakamura, the 2015 GEP laureate, Professor of University of California, Santa-Barbara, the 2014 Nobel Prize laureate in Physics have addressed the journalists.

As Rodney John Allam have mentioned in his speech, the main global energy trends are connected with almost double decrease in the oil prices.  “- Oil and coal producers have found themselves in difficult situation. Importers, on the contrary, are in the surplus. We have to develop new technologies in the energy production, transportation and consumption that will allow energy consumption reduction and minimize the carbon dioxide emissions.”
The 2015 GEP laureate’s innovation – Jayant Baliga’s insulated gate bipolar transistor – have become one of the most important innovations for the control and distribution of energy in the last years. His technology forms the basis for famous smart grids. In the last 25 years, IGBTs saved over 73,000 TWh of energy, over 6 trillion gas liters, and decreased CO2 emissions by 49, 5 billion metric tons. “ - The customer's savings exceeded $23,7 trillion”, - declared Mr. Baliga, adding that he aims to continue development of research in this filed.

The 2015 GEP laureate, professor of University of California, the scientist of japan origin Shuji Nakamura has also contributed a lot to the modern energy. He has invented blue LED which allowed energy-efficient white lighting technology. He was alredy acknowledged for the invention by the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014. “– We have to make sound energy consumption calculations. This is a global task we are to work on”, - assures Mr. Nakamura.

RAS Academician, the Chairman of the GEP Board of Trustees, member of Rosneft Board of Directors Nikolay Laverov has stressed that the 2015 GEP laureate’s inventions could be used more than for clean energy source.  They could be applied at production, in particular in auto-industry.

The Global Energy Prize is an independent award for outstanding scientific research and technological development in energy, which contribute to efficiency and environmentally friendly energy sources for the benefit of humanity. Since 2003, The Global Energy Prize has been awarded to 33 Laureates from 10 countries: the UK, Germany, Iceland, Canada, Russia, USA, Ukraine, France, Sweden and Japan. In 2015, the prize fund amounted to 33 million rubles.  The final choice of Laureates is decided by the International Committee of the Global Energy Prize, which consists of 25 respected scientists from 13 countries. The nominating pool of the Global Energy Prize is represented by 2800 scientists from 83 countries of the world.

The solemn GEP Award Ceremony will be held on June 19, 2015 within the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum.

In 2013 Russian President Vladimir Putin has noted: “- This prestigious award has reached a high level of international recognition. The outstanding scientists from numerous countries, those talented, dedicated, committed people, became laureates of this award. Their fundamental works and elaborations made a major contribution to the development of modern scientific thought; they represent a real breakthrough in solving the most important  issues of energy efficiency and energy saving.”
