The Global Energy Prize annually honors outstanding achievements in energy research and technology from around the world that are helping address the world’s various and pressing energy challenges.

The Russian President awarded the Global Energy Prize laureates

The Global Energy Prize laureates received awards from the President of the Russian Federation. Alexey Kontorovich and Vladimir Fortov were granted with the Order “For Services to Fatherland of 2 degree”. The high state award celebrates their meritorious achievements in the research field.

Alexey Kontorovich (the 2009 Global Energy Prize laureate) – is one of the pillars of the national geology: the scope of his professional interests includes issues of subsoil management, geological exploration development, advancement of oil, gas and coal industry in Siberia and Yakutia. Today he is a scientific director of the Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics SB RAS. In addition, Alexey Kontorovich - one of the main authors of the "Energy Strategy of Russia to 2030" and "Strategy of economic development of Siberia."

Vladimir Fortov (the 2013 Global Energy Prize laureate) played important role in modern physics and engineering development. He was one of the first to apply strong shock waves to a generation of intense pulses of electric currents and to also investigate the physical and chemical properties of materials under extreme pressure and temperatures. Starting from a scratch, from the unknown, he contributed a lot to the understanding and expansion of knowledge of the basic properties of matter under extreme conditions as well as created a new research area – dynamic physics of collision plasma.
